SpaceX is preparing to launch the world's most powerful rocket next week from South...
and appears ready to go. It is waiting on approval from the Federal Aviation Administration, which oversees all commercial rocket launches.
SpaceX has been developing the Starship spacecraft and Super Heavy rocket in Boca Chica, an unincorporated area outside of Brownsville. Starship has taken several high-altitude test flights, but it has never launched atop the Super Heavy rocket. This liftoff will go high enough and fast enough to reach orbit, though it won't make a full lap around the Earth. The Super Heavy rocket and its 33 engines will separate from the spacecraft and land in the Gulf of Mexico, roughly 20 miles from shore. Starship will continue traveling around the Earth. It's expected to land off the coast of Hawaii.
This rocket is key to Musk's vision of making humans multiplanetary. SpaceX is developing the rocket to carry humanity to Mars. It's also going to help NASA astronauts land on the moon. The astronauts will launch to the moon in a NASA rocket and spacecraft. Starship will launch separately on the Super Heavy rocket. Both will travel to the moon, where astronauts will transfer into Starship to reach the lunar surface in the Artemis III mission scheduled for 2025.
