During the Black Hat conference in Las Vegas, Facebook-owned WhatsApp was shown being hacked to change the text of a message and the identity of the sender.

"Towards the end of 2018, Check Point Research notified WhatsApp about new vulnerabilities in the popular messaging application," the researchers explained,"giving attackers the power to create and spread misinformation from what appear to be trusted sources."The ability to send a private message to another group participant, disguised as a public message, resulting in the"private" response from the targeted individual being visible to everyone in the conversation.

This despite Check Point informing WhatsApp of its findings in the name of responsible disclosure, and emphasizing these vulnerabilities were"of the utmost importance and require attention." Check Point even created a tool to exploit the vulnerabilities, decrypting WhatsApp communications and spoofing the messages, by way of a proof of concept to demonstrate the severity of the situation.WhatsApp would seem to have opted to leave more than 1.

I contacted the Facebook and WhatsApp press offices to request a new statement, or at least some comment, before publishing this story. Neither was prepared to provide such a statement. Facebook forwarded my request to WhatsApp, and all that the WhatsApp press office replied with were some background pointers from 2018 when the vulnerabilities were first disclosed. Permission was not given to attribute any of these to a WhatsApp spokesperson, however.
