In Saskatchewan, any trace of cannabis in a driver\u0027s system can have serious consequences.

Boulet said an officer told him to change his lifestyle.

Bonny Stevenson, president of Mothers Against Drunk Driving Saskatoon, said her organization’s members work with officers at police check stops and see a lot of stunned looks on people’s faces when they test positive for cannabis. She thinks the drivers have waited some period of time before driving and assumed they’d be OK.Article content

Robert Laprairie, an associate professor at the University of Saskatchewan, said research into the time it takes for cannabis to leave the body is a developing field and there’s new information almost daily. “Really, what I would like to see culturally a shift toward, is that any sort of impaired driving is discouraged. So it’s not just cannabis or alcohol, but what kind of prescription medications are you using, or how tired are you? These are also things that can impair your driving.”

The suspension remain on the person’s driving record permanently, unless they successfully appeal their suspension to the Highway Traffic Board.
