This approach to saving for retirement is good for contributions, but there are a few caveats.
Saving and investing for retirement can be extremely confusing, and at times, quite overwhelming. The “set it and forget it” approach helps in certain situations — but there are a few caveats.
With the “set it and forget it” strategy, investors create their investment portfolios and then leave them alone. This approach makes a lot of sense when markets are acting up, and for investors who can’t stomach volatility; and while it can circumvent emotional reactions and reckless trading, it shouldn’t be used all of the time.
The first — the asset allocation of a retirement plan may shift with market movements. The portfolio may have been invested with 60% in equities and 40% in bonds, but after some market volatility, that mix could change as well, and become 70% equities and 30% bonds, for example. If the portfolio was constructed to meet financial goals, this could alter if, how or when an investor will actually attain those goals.
