With Carlos Correa gone, Alex Bregman thinks he knows what will bring his power back to Astros
It isn’t for a lack of effort that third baseman Alex Bregman has gone from being one of baseball’s premier hitters in 2019 to far less productive the last two years.WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — A brief talk with Alex Bregman can turn into a hitting clinic. Few in the Astros clubhouse or baseball at large are as in tune with their swing mechanics. Fewer articulate them with such simple verbiage.
Carlos Correa’s offseason departure robbed Houston of one such hitter. Without him, the team is in search of another righthanded power bat. Whether Bregman can come back as one remains a mystery. Hamstring and quad injuries cost him 78 games across the past two seasons. He underwent offseason surgery on his right wrist to correct a problem that clearly impacted him during the Astros’ World Series loss last October.
“Any time you can put a .900 or 1.000 OPS in the lineup, it sets a pretty nice anchor in the middle of the order,” Snitker said, stating the obvious. “But just having him in the lineup day in and day out, he’s such a competitive presence in our dugout, in our clubhouse and on the field, that just having him in the lineup every day — regardless of how he’s performing at the plate — is such a huge advantage for us.
