The cool, crisp start of autumn also heralds the beginning of snotty, miserable flu season. Whether you live in the bustling downtown or in the quieter fringes of your city could change your chances of coming down with the flu.

Moreover, the spatial characteristics of the city you live in also changes how easily the flu will spread.

Researchers in Mexico and the U.S. incorporated neighborhood-level differences into an epidemiological model in aposted on bioRxiv. The collaboration across Georgia State University, the National Institutes of Health, Scripps Institution of Oceanography at University of California, San Diego and Universidad de Guadalajara . used census data for Guadalajara, Mexico.

They found that accounting for differences in flu contact in urban areas predicts smaller outbreaks than models that assign one value across the city. Therefore, people contribute unequally to spreading disease, which is dependent on where they live.
