As Americans recover from Covid’s financial strain, couples are less inclined to go into debt for a big, romantic gesture.
"Inflation is generally making everything more expensive, so I'm not surprised that spending is expected to be higher than previous years," said Matt Schulz, LendingTree's credit card expert.
Couples are also more likely to opt for an evening out this year, compared to last year, when Covid-related restrictions made it harder to eat in a restaurant or see a show, Schulz added.Still, traditional gender roles remain even as technology continues to. Men are likely to spend significantly more than women on the Feb. 14 holiday, averaging $235 versus just $119.
