The White House announced a tentative plan to tackle the growing threat of fentanyl laced with xylazine.

a tentative plan to tackle the growing threat of fentanyl laced with xylazine, a lethal and fast-spreading drug combination driving a wave of overdose deaths across the U.S., the scope of which, the White House acknowledges, is not entirely clear. The Biden Administration said it aims to cut overdose deaths linked to xylazine—a powerful animal tranquilizer that is not approved for any use in humans—by 15% over the next two years.

The White House acknowledged it does not have a complete understanding of the scale of the xylazine problem due to a lack of tests for the drug in humans and patchy implementation of testing for drug products, which theaims to remedy by ramping up testing on confiscated drugs, developing new rapid strip tests for use in clinical settings and testing overdose patients in hospitals.

Other key aspects include creating a clinical algorithm to predict whether a patient has used xylazine, setting up treatment protocols and exploring how to schedule the drug under the Controlled Substances Act while preserving its “legitimate” uses in veterinary medicine. The administration also said it plans to pursue human research on how the drug acts in humans, how it interacts with fentanyl in people and evaluate possible “antidotes” in humans as “quickly as possible.”the drug combination an “emerging threat” in April. The strategy is the administration’s first major step to address the issue since that declaration and comes alongside its broader drug crackdown, which is largely focused on reducing harm and deaths from drugs.

. The figure, up nearly 15% from 2020, marks the first time overdose deaths have topped 100,000 in a calendar year.
