Whitecap Dakota Nation marks becoming the first self-governing Indigenous nation in Saskatchewan with ceremony south of Saskatoon.

Whitecap Dakota Nation Chief Darcy Bear, left, and Gary Anandasangaree, Federal Minister of Crown–Indigenous Relations, arrive at a press conference at Dakota Dunes Resort Monday morning. The two announced a self-government treaty recognizing the Whitecap Dakota Nation/Wapaha Ska Dakota Oyate. The treaty is being called a major step toward Whitecap moving out of the Indian Act and enacting its vision of self-governance.
