The voice of Margo from the Despicable Me franchise, the oldest of Gru's adopted children, is recognizable to fans of Nickelodeon sitcoms.
The voice of Margo in Despicable Me is just as renowned and recognizable as any of her prolific co-stars. Despicable Me revolves around a supervillain named Gru, who adopts three girls as part of a diabolical scheme and ends up accepting the responsibilities of fatherhood and changing his deplorable ways. Margo is the oldest of Gru’s adopted daughters, and, therefore, the most responsible, which makes her the main catalyst for Gru’s evolution from villain to hero.
As the beacon of love and childhood innocence that inspires Gru to give up his life of supervillainy, Margo is the heart of Despicable Me. Being the oldest of the three orphans, and therefore the only one looking out for them, has made Margo protective of her sisters. Whereas Edith and Agnes are happy to be adopted by Gru, Margo is naturally skeptical as she doesn’t want to be let down.
Summer from School of Rock has a lot in common with Margo from the Despicable Me franchise, both in terms of her personality and her role in the story. Despite just being a kid, Cosgrove’s character is far more mature, sensible, and responsible than the adult lead of the movie. In Despicable Me, Margo is the voice of reason opposite Gru’s reckless supervillain antics.
