Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny director James Mangold explains why Shia LaBeouf isn't returning as Indy's son Mutt after playing such a prominent role in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. It wouldn't be an Indiana Jones movie without a trusty sidekick for Harrison Ford's swashbuckling archeologist, and the upcoming film will pair the star with Phoebe Waller-Bridge's Helena, Indy's Goddaughter.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Ahead of the Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny release date later this month, Mangold addresses LaBeouf's absence in an interview with Variety at the film's U.S. premiere. The director explains that, for him, the reasoning behind LaBeouf not returning was part of an attempt to recapture a crucial Indy sidekick dynamic.
“When I came on, I wanted to capture that wonderful energy between Indy and an intrepid female character. So that was my first goal. Helena, then, could be an interesting middle ground between a character like Marion or Elsa and Mutt. While it has been confirmed that Indiana Jones 5 will explain Mutt's absence, the character not actually appearing might give the upcoming movie a chance to explore a totally new side of Indy while still honoring the franchise's roots.
