Mark Wahlberg's disaster movie, Deepwater Horizon, bombed at the box office, despite receiving optimistic reviews from critics and viewers.

Deepwater Horizon and its take on a real-world disaster had favorable reviews from viewers and critics, but, for several reasons, it failed at the box office. Set in the year 2010, Deepwater Horizon recounts the true story of the titular drill rig that exploded in the Gulf of Mexico and led to the largest marine oil spill in history.

Deepwater Horizon's Budget Was Way Too Big With a monumental budget of $110 million-$120 million after tax incentives and rebates, Deepwater Horizon only earned close to $122 million at the worldwide box office . For a movie that was targeted primarily towards an adult audience with its PG-13 rating and disturbing depiction of the chaos that ensues during the disaster, Deepwater Horizon's budget was way too high.

Deepwater Horizon Had Stiff Release Competition Deepwater Horizon's poor box office can also blamed on its release window. It not only faced stiff competition from Tim Burton's Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children but also had to go head-to-head with another true-story adaptation, Sully.
