The critically-panned R-rated comedy did surprisingly well at the box office and now on streaming services, but a sequel still appears unlikely.
Dirty Grandpa is widely regarded as the low point for Robert De Niro's acting career despite its inexplicable box office success and recent resurgence on Netflix. Heavy on gross-out humor, the film was criticized for being uniquely unfunny upon its release, but has somehow gained status as one of Netflix's most-watched movies since its arrival on the streaming platform.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT De Niro plays the manipulative Dick Kelly in Dirty Grandpa, with Zac Efron portraying his grandson as they make their way to and through Spring Break season in Florida. Aubrey Plaza, Zoey Deutch, Julianne Hough and Dermot Mulroney round out the Dirty Grandpa cast, with Danny Glover even making an appearance as De Niro's old Army buddy.
Dirty Grandpa 2 Is Impossible After Dirty Grandpa Box office and streaming success can certainly do a lot of heavy lifting when it comes to making sequels happen, but in the case of Dirty Grandpa there are simply too many other factors standing in its way. First and foremost, it's fairly clear that De Niro would not be interested in a return. The acting icon refused to do press for the first movie, which is not surprising – the film was so bad that it did damage to his reputation.
A Dirty Grandpa Sequel Should Never Be Allowed To Happen Even if all the pieces fell into place to green light a sequel, it shouldn't be allowed to occur. Some of the loudest criticism for Dirty Grandpa was related to its use of racism, sexism and homophobia for humor, all of which came across as offensive and objectively unfunny. There is simply no need to revisit that kind of comedy with any movie, much less to continue a story that was labeled by many as the worst movie of 2016.
Another problem with a sequel is that the premise, loose and shallow as it was, really only had potential based on the actors involved with it. Many moviegoers--and now, likely streamers--signed up for a bromance road trip comedy featuring Robert De Niro and Zac Efron. Take De Niro out of the picture and what's left is an extremely basic comedy with no allure.
