I talked with three experts about why our minds race as we’re trying to fall asleep, what that incessant whir of thoughts has to do with insomnia and what we can do about it.The importance of sleep is something innate to us. When we don’t get enough of it, we reallyit — we’re moody, irritable, exhausted. Our immune systems don’t function as well so we’re more likely to get sick. The term “run-down” comes to mind.For the most part, the biological purpose of sleep remains a mystery.
Sleep may also help us consolidate our memories, transforming them from transient thoughts to memories that can be accessed years later. “Much of this consolidation occurs during Stage 2 sleep, a light sleep phase that occurs most in the hours prior to awakening.
