Earth Day was first recognized in 1970 as a joint initiative between a Republican and Democrat in Congress.

In the months that followed, Congress passed multiple laws, including the National Environmental Education Act and the Clean Air Act.According to earthday.org, the call to action took on even more meaning in the 1990s. That's when the movement became global,"mobilizing 200 million people in 141 countries."
The observation of Earth Day has led to hundreds of millions of trees being planted to counter the effects of deforestation.
