What’s different about the outrage over Thomas, though, is how deeply hypocritical it feels when considered within the context of how women’s sports are handled in America. As soon as Thomas started taking home trophies as a trans woman, her detractors couldn’t wait to defend the supposed sanctity of swimming, and of women’s sports in general, when asummarizing 30 years of sports coverage found that 80% of televised sports news and highlights shows included zero stories on women’s sports.
This media indifference to women’s athletics is, of course, mirrored by the way female professional athletes are treated by the systems that employ them.
