“Instagram, especially, is this place where there’s a pressure to hide and show some perfectly structured life almost to the extent where people don’t seem human,” 23-year-old Clare* tells me. Despite the app's success, we’ve wised up to its harmful effects lately, andthe app can promote unhealthy, unattainable beauty standards. The ability to filter photos and curate "perfect" feeds within the app can result in users comparing themselves with unrealistic images.
Freedom to self-express is central to our identities. For marginalized groups who have been oppressed or denied this human right, having an outlet like a finsta can be incredibly important. “Creating a community for ourselves where, seen, heard, understood, and accepted plays heavily on the development of self-confidence, esteem, worth, and belonging,” says Brighton-based accredited counselor Alex Macfarlane.
