'Why take the chance of coming back?'

The popular NBC series, which ran for five seasons between 2006 and 2011, is based on the 1990 nonfiction book Friday Night Lights: A Town, a Team, and a Dream, which was previously adapted into the 2004 movie Friday Night Lights. In all forms, the story follows the exploits of a high school football team in a Texas town.
Collider recently sat down with director Peter Berg to discuss his work on Netflix's Painkiller. However, as the director of the Friday Night Lights movie and the developer of the series, he also offered some insight into the future of that universe.
We talked about it. Over the years, it’s come and gone. Writers have come in and pitched it. And there’s been a certain amount of excitement. And then, I’ll think about it and I’ll call Kyle Chandler or Connie Britton, who I like so much, and we’ll be like, “Yeah, but why? It was a great relationship. We have nothing but great memories. Why take the chance of coming back, and then we end up hating each other and make a really bad movie?” It’s tricky. It’s like going back to a relationship.
A Friday Night Lights Comeback Might Not Work Even if it reunited the original developer and stars, Berg is right that a Friday Night Lights follow-up might not work. For one thing, the actors are now more than a decade older than they were when the high school-set series went off the air. This discrepancy would particularly affect the performers who played high schoolers, whose characters would presumably have moved on in their lives since the series finale.
There is also precedent for television series being rebooted just to get canceled again. While some shows proved to be successful and ran for multiple seasons, like the long-running sitcom Will & Grace, others have not been so lucky. The cult classic comedy Arrested Development, for instance, only ran for two seasons when it was rebooted by Netflix, which drew mixed to negative reactions from critics and audiences alike on Rotten Tomatoes.
