After several years of resentment, Sarah Ilston is falling back in love with autumn and winter
, and subsequently winter, signals the end of summer; and according to the media industry, the end of carefree fun. Summer is marketed as a time for holiday romances, festivals with friends and generally round-the-clock fun in the sun. But what happens when summer doesn’t really ever arrive? As it didn’t a few years ago? As June merges into July and the grey skies speckled with rain remain, the clouds to present us with the expected warm sunshine.
But not this year, this year I welcome the crisp, sunny air, the annual rummage through my knitwear basket and the joy of layering oversized scarf upon vintage denim jacket and if I’m lucky – accompanied by one of my many woolly bobble hats. And the reason? We had an actual, substantial summer once again;, so prolonged in fact, that I stopped referring to it as a ‘heatwave’ and resigned myself to the fact that I happened to live in a hot climate now.
, my thirst for a good, long, proper summer is quenched, and I've actually had the chance to miss the cold...This must be what it feels like to live in a country with distinct seasonal changes, or back in the days before climate change turned our weather system upside down. And I have to say, although not quite longing for the New York-style Indian Summers and following bitterly harsh winters, I could definitely get used to this feeling - that all is as it should be.
