Howling winds are pummeling the San Francisco Bay Area this month, and some of the recent storm systems moving through the region are to blame.
transitions into springlike conditions, said Brayden Murdock, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service’s Bay Area office. The low-pressure systems that contributed to some of the storms earlier this year have moved inland and to the east, and are now situated over the Sierra Nevada, causing gusts to develop in their wake.
“Wind goes around these things in a clockwise direction,” Murdock said. “We’re getting that windier portion of that edge of the system and with that, lots of northerly gusts off the coast. That’s why we’re not seeing much in the way of rain but a lot of wind.” Maximum wind gusts topped out at 65 mph in Cupertino and 52 mph in San Francisco — the highest wind speeds recorded in the Bay Area on Tuesday. A wind advisory is in effect for the North Bay coast until 9 p.m. Wednesday as northwesterly winds of 20 to 30 mph and gusts of up to 50 mph in higher elevation areas pick up.
“If you think you’re getting a break tomorrow, you’ll be disappointed,” Murdock said. “A lot of people don’t realize sand could be blowing over the roads, so don’t be surprised if you see traffic slow down on coastal highways.”
