You don’t have to be planning for “FIRE” in order to save like it, this writer says.

“I live cheap” and “save a few thousand dollars each month,” penny-acre wrote.Penny-Acre said their mother, who is young, has been diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer.

So the day after receiving the news, penny-acre bought a used car for $23,000 and “didn’t blink an eye” at writing the check. “Easiest money I ever spent,” they wrote.“Saving money to retire early is a worthwhile goal, because none of us know how long we’ll be on this Earth,” penny-acre wrote. “And second, by living within your means, you’re setting yourself up to be able to handle life’s curveballs.”These people left their jobs behind to retire early — then life got in the way.

“Yup. My wife was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer,” wrote “Pun_Thread_Fail.” “Treatment cost $30k even after insurance and now she’s in remission. … It’ll set back my RE a bit, but totally worth it.” Of course, when these writers told about their medical emergencies, many were asked whether insurance could have covered the costs. In some cases, it covered the treatments partially, and others said some costs were “hidden.”
