Flea's Silverlake Conservatory of Music has grown immensely over the years, to now teaching 1200 students a month, including over 200 on scholarship. Its grown thanks to the help of musicians from Bruno Mars and Eddie Vedder to Neil Young and Patti Smith.

The diversity and size of the artists are of course in part a testament to the popularity within the music industry of the school's cofounder, Flea, and his Red Hot Chili Peppers.But, more than anything, the willingness of so many music superstars, as well as luminaries from other worlds, like Marc Maron, who hosted the event, and artist Shepard Fairey, to lend their time and talents to the Conservatory is a testament to the importance of arts education.
The results of the support of the music industry and benefits like the one Saturday are impressive. Having opened 18 years ago with a handful of students, Rey takes me through the numbers of what the Silverlake Conservatory of Music does in 2019 and they are as impressive as the list of bands on the wall.
