This shop was founded by two runners—Victor Diaz and Bolota Asmerom—who shared a vision of support, representation, and inclusivity.
Years earlier, the professional photographer completed a couple of, but he stopped running in 2013 after struggling through a 13.1 that was 10 minutes slower than his personal best. The experience left the Oakland, California, native feeling “demoralized” and unmotivated to continue. Seven years later, Rasheed’s friend recommended Renegade Running as the spot to purchase newand help him pick up the sport again—and when he walked into the store, Rasheed was surprised by the reception he got.
After trying on multiple brands, Rasheed picked a pair of shoes he liked, and Diaz suggested he run to Lake Merritt to test them out. “I’ve never heard anybody say that. Maybe [an employee will suggest I] put them on and walk around the store, but never to go head out for a couple of blocks,” Rasheed said. “I was just amazed by that.”After taking the shoes out for a test run and spending an unexpected 60 minutes in the shop, Rasheed purchased the pair.
Growing up in San Jose, California, about an hour south of Oakland, Diaz said he had a “tumultuous” experience in his early years of education, which involved him getting kicked out of school at 16. Despite the challenges, Diaz found joy and a sense of safety in the youth sports he participated in, including his youth football team in San Jose, the Renegades.In his early 20s, Diaz moved south to San Diego. He was working out at a neighborhood track when an older man approached him and asked if he’d be interested in joining the track and cross-country team at the local community college. Diaz enrolled in the school and accepted the offer.
