Kaya was greeted by cheering Southwest Airlines crew members and passengers when she deboarded her flight home to Dallas on Feb. 2.

Kaya was the inspiration for the federal law that allows veterans with mental illness to unify with a service dog. It was signed into law in 2021.

And she was incredibly smart, even as a puppy. Lyle said he potty trained her in just two days. She learned how to wake up Lyle from bad dreams or help make the bad days go away. They worked as a team from there on out. When people would stop him on the street and ask about Kaya, he would tell them about her work. One day, it just so happened to be a U.S. senator.

“We were able to demonstrate together how powerful this option can be for veterans struggling with post-traumatic stress or another mental health condition or going down the dark path of suicidal ideations,” he said. Kaya had a growth removed in January. Lyle said it metastasized after the operation, causing Kaya a lot of pain over the last month. He took her to get multiple opinions, including at Texas A&M University, where he and Kaya had shared some of their best memories.“Most of my professors just loved having her in class,” Lyle said.
