Giants general manager Dave Gettleman swears he has a plan to fix the franchise. A look at what he is potentially trying to accomplish and why it carries more risk than reward.

Share to twitterINDIANAPOLIS, IN - FEBRUARY 27: New York Giants general manager Dave Gettleman speaks to the media during the NFL Scouting Combine on February 27, 2019 at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis, IN. Giants general manager Dave Gettleman continues to insist that he has a plan to make the Giants into a contender sooner than later.“Really and truly, very honestly, it’s not my responsibility to tell you guys what I’m doing,” Gettleman said Monday during a conference call.

To"rebuild" would mean to toss out the baby with the bathwater; instead, Gettleman identified core pieces from last year’s roster such as Saquon Barkley, Will Hernandez, Nate Solder, Dalvin Tomlinson, B.J. Hill, Sam Beal, Sterling Shepard, Evan Engram and Aldrick Rosas, just to name a few, as players to build around.

With the upcoming draft class absolutely stacked in defensive talent, especially pass rushers, Gettleman made the decision to move on from Vernon and his $19.5 million cap hit and eat the $8 million dead money. DENVER, CO - DECEMBER 15: Jabrill Peppers #22 of the Cleveland Browns runs with the ball during the game against the Denver Broncos at Broncos Stadium at Mile High on December 15, 2018 in Denver, Colorado. The Browns defeated the Broncos 17-16. For comparison purposes, Jabrill Peppers, acquired in the Odell Beckham trade to fill Collins' “box safety’ role, finished six spots ahead of Collins at No. 53 in coverage.

Let's start with the free-agent class. Truthfully, who among the free agents would have been a good investment? Presumably, the Giants will add another quarterback to the roster this year as Shurmur has indicated in the past that he likes to have a young player on board to develop. However, it's looking more and more as though that quarterback won't be the No. 6 overall pick in the draft.

Or, if Eli Manning, whom Dave Gettleman still believes can be a functional quarterback, plays as well as the Giants say he did down the stretch last year, perhaps then they'll look at a one-year extension.Yes, he did, that in a response to the addition of 30+-year-olds like safety Antoine Bethea and guard Kevin Zeitler.

Further, there have been just as many if not more players under the age of 30 who haven’t worked out for one reason or another. Gettleman reiterated that he’s not making things up as he goes along, that the franchise does indeed have a plan.
