Clay Walker and Billy Gibbons are just as excited for the rodeo as you are.

Like a busted and repaired wagon wheel, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo rolls again this week. Sure, there may be a few masked faces, unlike years past. But Houston’s cultural juggernaut will do as it has done for decades: open with trail rides and a parade, then course through rodeo competitions, concerts, rides, food and wine. Barring some fast-moving COVID variant, Houston will host its first full rodeo month in two years.

The 2022 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo parade grand marshal Cody Johnson rides in the parade as the parade returns after skipping a year due to COVID-19 pandemic Saturday, Feb. 26, 2022, in downtown Houston.“There’s no question, when the event shut down, people were looking to us to see what happens next,” says Chris Boleman, chairman and CEO of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

“COVID took away one of the greatest joys for people in Houston,” says Clay Walker, the country music singer-songwriter who played the rodeo 1994-2009 and 2011. “There are so many things to appreciate about it. I think it’s incredible people come from out of state and they are freaked out by this rodeo. They buy cowboy hats and boots. Everybody for a month is a cowboy or cowgirl. To me, it’s fascinating that you can grow a culture like this.
