None of the Warriors' superstars played more than 38 minutes in Game 1. Lakers head coach Darvin Ham explained Tuesday night why his superstars both played 40-plus.
He averaged 34.7 minutes per game this season, and is up to 38.9 per game during the playoffs, mostly because the Dubs have been terrible every time he's gone to the bench this postseason. With Curry on the floor, the Dubs were +47 in the first round. With him off the floor, they were an astonishing -43. Every minute he's been on the floor has been precious to Golden State.
And yet Warriors head coach Steve Kerr has been reticent to push Curry's minutes even further. After Curry played 43 minutes in a must-win Game 4 against the Kings, KerrKerr said he'd like to get Curry 5 minutes of rest each half . Curry played all but 43 seconds of the second half of Game 5 against the Kings, logging 42 minutes in a critical homecourt advantage-stealing win. Kerr then dismissed the increased workload being a factor in Game 6:"I don’t think that’ll be a factor," he said."Steph is in incredible shape. He’s one of the most gifted athletes in the world in terms of his conditioning and how he maintains his health and his body. The guy’s amazing. I think he’ll be fine.
In the Kings' Game 6 blowout, Curry played a series-low 36 minutes. Against the Lakers in Game 1, he played a team-high 37 minutes and 31 seconds. Klay Thompson also logged just over 37 minutes, while both Draymond Green and Andrew Wiggins didn't top 34 minutes. That was in stark contrast to the Lakers, who rode Anthony Davis and LeBron James — Davis played 43 minutes and 50 seconds, and didn't sit the entire second half. LeBron James and his 38-year-old body played 40 minutes and 6 seconds.
