But since the numbers never increased, HBO decided to pull the plug on the series, making Pearlman’s fears come true. It’s also worth noting that season 2 had an even bigger budget than the first season, so an equal/better performance was necessary for it., series creator Jim Hecht wrote his reaction to the cancellation stating:
“Look, I know there are a lot of people who want me to say, ‘F— HBO.’ And there is some of that in my house. But I love the people we worked with … HBO paid big money and gave us a ton of freedom to make our dream show. It just happens to not be the right show for their platform at this time.” A lot went right for the series in terms of its stellar cast, creative team, narrative, and critical acclaim. However, its viewership numbers didn’t match all that greatness.At the time of writing, there are no plans for Winning Time season 3 in the near future.
With that said, if the viewership of season 2 gets lifted in the coming year, HBO or another network could pick up the series for a third season or reboot. However, fans shouldn’t keep high hopes for that to happen.
