Because a label says a snack is healthy and all-natural, what does this really mean? We don't know? The last time the FDA created regulations around healthy labeling was 1994. Since then, nutritionists and doctors have changed recommendations for healthy food and beverage consumption.
The FDA is planning to address food and beverage labeling this summer and will redefine what is “healthy.” The last time the FDA created regulations around healthy labeling was 1994. Since then, dietary habits have altered, while dieticians, nutritionists and doctors have changed recommendations for food and beverage consumption. Meanwhile, some brands have been playing fast and loose with food labels.
One of the catalysts for these new regulations is due to the FDA taking away KIND brand’s “healthy” label because the snacks have too much fat. The 1994 FDA regulation specifies a food may only be considered healthy if it contains no more than 3 grams of total fat or 1 gram of saturated fat per serving.
The current food-labeling scenario is a mess and getting messier. The issues of what is “healthy” and what is “natural” are landmine issues. There are as many positions on what is good for us as there are dietary regimens. A recent TV advertisement for the Jenny Craig diet program has someone saying that the diet is amazing, she lost many pounds and she just ate a piece of chocolate cake.
