The other side of the equation is equally as questionable. Cousins’ future in Minnesota remains muddied. Cousins is currently scheduled to enter the final year of his contract in 2023, where he’ll carry a sizable cap charge of $36.2 million, according to Spotrac. The Vikings reportedly aren’t interested in inking Cousins to a short-term extension. Veteran journeymanis Minnesota’s only quarterback under contract beyond 2023. The impending campaign could be Cousins’ last in Minnesota.
San Francisco could eventually reveal itself as one of Cousins’ suitors. 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spent two campaigns as Cousins’ offensive coordinator with the Washington Commanders. Shanahan had a say in Cousins’ drafting, and the former teacher-pupil pairing has remained close ever since. Cousins credits much of his behind-the-scenes development to Shanahan’s tutelage. Few NFL coaches possess a better understanding of Cousins’ skill set and personality. If the 49ers find themselves in the market for a signal-caller next offseason, Cousins becomes a straightforward candidate.
The 2023 campaign may be a fate-deciding season for San Francisco’s trio of quarterbacks. A convincing starter may emerge given the elite surroundings. Shanahan won’t tolerate anything less than stellar quarterback play. Don’t expect an immediate trade, but Cousins could be Shanahan’s 2024 starter if San Francisco’s season fails to meet expectations.
