The Will County Board on Thursday approved its Access Will County plan, a comprehensive study designed to improve dial-a-ride transportation services for older residents and people with disabilities, but County Executive Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant said she plans to veto an amendment that contained last minute changes.
Dial-a-ride busses are lined up in Highland, Indiana, in 2020. An effort to expand on-call transportation to older residents and disabled people throughout Will County is being debated along party lines at the Will County Board.
Democrat Denise Winfrey, of Joliet, was absent Thursday, and Republicans voted against allowing her to participate remotely. Currently, Will County collaborates with townships to operate Will Ride, a service that helps seniors and people with disabilities travel to doctor’s appointments, grocery stores, work or community events. Will Ride operates in seven townships in eastern Will County, including Frankfort, Green Garden, Monee, Crete, Will, Washington and Peotone townships.
Some of the survey results revealed that people don’t use the system because it’s too confusing, they don’t qualify for the service or there is no service in the area, Bottomley said. “It is a guidebook,” she said. “It lays the framework for providing countywide paratransit access to all of Will County.”
