When the owners of the Chicago Bears announced earlier this year that they had purchased 326 acres in Arlington Heights for a new stadium and entertainment district, they did us one favor: They chose to stay within Chicagoland. The Bears would remain the Chicago Bears.
The situations highlight a conundrum for public officials: To what extent should taxpayers pony up for new ballparks to keep teams from abandoning metro Chicago? Dig down, however, and public views prove to be more nuanced. A majority of Americans believe that paying for sports stadiums is a good use of taxpayer money. That same national poll, however, also shows a similar number believe the private sector should foot most or all of the bill, while 1 in 4 Americans are OK with team owners splitting the cost evenly with the public. Only 11% support the public paying for all or most of a stadium.
