Stressed out over coronavirus and working from home? Marijuana businesses say an increase in pot sales show people are looking to relax.
Americans are stocking up on as they prepare to confront the coronavirus outbreak.
The sharp rise in sales is a pattern being repeated across the country in states where recreational marijuana is legal, from California to Oregon, Alaska to Nevada. Not only are there more customers, but they're buying more at one time. The same trend is alsoIn Washington state, sales soared by 33% on Sunday, compared to the week prior, reported cannabis data and analytics firm, which said the average per-person purchase rose to $33.70.
An estimated 211,000 full-time employees worked in the legal marijuana industry across the U.S. in 2019, according to cannabis recruiting firm Vangst. In many cities and states that have announced social-distancing restrictions and that have legal marijuana stores, the shops have been allowed to remain open as long as they follow best-practices to suppress the chances of transmission.
In Northern Colorado, dispensary Organic Alternatives decided to shut despite burgeoning sales for both medical and recreational customers, said Maka Kalai, a company spokesman. California-based Glass House Group, which owns four dispensaries, bought two used Toyota Priuses this weekend, and hopes to buy more, in anticipation of increased delivery demand, said CEO Kyle Kazan, 53. He said sales at the stores on Friday surpassed what is usually their biggest annual sales day, the marijuana holiday April 20, or 4/20.
