McDonald broke out for the Cyclones in 2020 as he finished the season tied for first in the nation in total sacks with 10.5. He followed that season up with another dominating year in 2021, once again putting up double-digit sacks and finishing seventh in the country with a career-high 11.5 sacks. Though his sack production slowed in 2022, that was likely because Iowa State had him playing in a wider variety of alignments this season.
Looking at McDonald’s frame, it’s not hard to see why he was so successful rushing the passer in college. At about 6-foot-4 and 241 pounds, the Iowa State product isn’t someone that can dominate reps by using brute force and pure strength to bully offensive tackles. Instead, McDonald took full advantage of his natural length, good bend, smooth movement, and speed to counter blockers in his collegiate career.
Attending the 2023 Senior Bowl gave McDonald the chance to prove that he could succeed against some of the best offensive linemen in his draft class. With 35-inch arms, McDonald was by far the lengthiest edge rusher in Mobile, and he combined that length and his speed to his advantage all week by getting his hands on linemen before they could reach him.
