Acuna hit the ground running and has already stolen an NL-leading 31 bases through 73 games. Only Oakland A's outfielderIt appears to be a foregone conclusion that he will — barring immediate injury — easily cross the threshold for SB. He swiped 13 in April, 10 in May, and has eight in 17 games in June, so his pace hasn't slowed through the season's first three months.
Some of that added success can be attributed to the larger bags introduced to MLB this season as well as rules related to pitchers only being able to throw over to first base twice per at-bat without successfully picking a runner off. The question is, perhaps surprisingly, whether or not he'll be able to harness his power throughout the summer months. His 15 home runs are OK, but currently rank 15th in MLB.Those projections are fairly conservative but it's understandable. Hitting 40 home runs — ignoring the stolen bases for a moment — is itself difficult and fairly infrequent. Since 2010, there have been 55 instances where a player has hit 40 or more dingers. And Acuna only barely reached that mark in 2019.
It's worth noting that Acuna also hasn't had the same amount of pop since tearing his ACL roughly halfway through his 2021 season — a year where he was likely well on his way to join the 40-40 club before it ended prematurely. He had 24 homers and 17 stolen bases through 82 games, which would have made the swiped bags the more questionable half of the equation in that instance. Upon his return in 2022, Acuna showed off his speed by stealing 29 bags in 119 games but only hit 15 homers.
