The once-temporary stay in Hayward is now set to last the rest of the 2023 season, with the Roots focused instead on building a 10,000-seat soccer stadium next to the Oakland Coliseum.
OAKLAND — Amid all the talk of the A’s leaving town for Las Vegas, another of Oakland’s last-remaining professional sports teams isEarlier this year, popular upstart soccer franchise Oakland Roots SCat Oakland’s Laney College to play at Cal State East Bay in Hayward.
The team has been in talks with a local group that’s on track to acquire half the Coliseum’s property rights from the city. Pending that deal, a return to Laney College appears increasingly unlikely. Laney College had housed the Roots since 2018, but Hodul said that an upcoming companion women’s team, the Oakland Soul, actually wouldn’t be able to play at all on the Laney field based on the requirements of the professional league the team hopes to enter.
Still, Beam believes the team belongs at Laney College, where its stadium just south of Lake Merritt fed into a local energy that he described as unmistakably characteristic of Oakland.
