When his high school career at Willis High wraps up next season, DJ Lagway hopes to be called a state champion.The Wildkats’ dynamic senior quarterback, a five-star recruit verbally committed to Florida and ESPN’s No. 12 overall prospect in the Class of 2024, is the first from Montgomery County to make the prestigious Elite 11 finals Wednesday through Friday in Los Angeles.
Aside from Lagway, other participants include Saline’s CJ Carr , Providence Day’s Jadyn Davis , Frisco Emerson’s Michael Hawkins Jr. , Trinity Christian’s Colin Hurley , Langston Hughes’ Prentiss Noland , Avon Old Farms’ Ryan Puglisi , Pinnacle’s Dylan Raiola and Carlsbad’s Julian Sayin . In eight games for Willis last season, Lagway completed 67 percent of his passes for 2,081 yards, 24 touchdowns and five interceptions, while rushing for 517 yards and seven touchdowns.
“It’s the variety of arm angles,” Lagway said. “Making sidearm throws comes very comfortable to me. There’s balance between finding when to do that and when to be mechanically sound.”
