The Green Bay Packers surprised Chicago, 10-3, in the season-opener for both teams Thursday.

Green Bay had seven new starters on the defensive side of the ball — defensive end Montravius Adams, outside linebackers Za’Darius Smith and Preston Smith, inside linebacker Raven Greene, cornerback Tony Brown, and safeties Adrian Amos and Darnell Savage. Now, for the first time in nearly a decade, Green Bay’s defense appears good enough to carry it to greatness.But LaFleur won his first game as an NFL head coach. The only other Packers coaches to win their first game were Curly Lambeau , Vince Lombardi , Phil Bengtson , Forrest Gregg and Ray Rhodes .
Even Green Bay’s David Bakhtiari, the NFL’s No. 1 ranked left tackle by Pro Football Focus last season, allowed two sacks. In all, it was a forgettable night for the offensive line. “I never try to be too high or too low,” Amos said last week. “I think especially in this game and playing in the secondary, you can’t get too up or too down. Things happen. With the business part of it, that’s what it is – it’s a business. I’m just going out there trying to prove myself to the league.”Packers head coach Matt LaFleur wants to strike a far greater run-pass balance than Mike McCarthy did during his tenure.
“I think, as you’ve seen in the preseason, he’s kicked really, really well,” Packers special teams coach Shawn Mennenga said earlier this week. “From practice onto the preseason games has carried over as far as his hang time and his distance and where he’s putting the ball at have improved. I’m hoping that carries over to the regular season. That’s the plan. I’m excited about where he’s going.
