NEW: At least 36,000 people have died following last week's powerful earthquakes in Turkey and Syria. But around 95% of the rebel-held region in northwestern Syria — home to 4.4M people — has not been searched, a leading aid organization says.

“Areas of northwest Syria felt abandoned, because no search and rescue teams were able to enter,” Bahia Zrikem of the Norwegian Refugee Council said earlier this week.

Syrians warm up by a fire at a makeshift shelter near the rebel-held town of Jindayris. The earthquake has worsened an already dire humanitarian situation in the region.It was not possible to verify the Turkish government’s statement, but more than a week afterhit the region and killed more than 39,000, it is undeniable that aid and volunteers have flowed into Turkey but trickled into Syria.

A makeshift shelter for people who were left homeless, near the rebel-held town of Jindayris. Many of those affected were already displaced by years of civil war.Now, with little hope of finding any more survivors in the rubble, particularly given the scarcity of the heavy machinery required for such operations, search and rescue efforts had wound down in the area Friday, the volunteer rescue group White Helmets said.
