In the latest sign that sustainability is a big trend in the retail industry, specialty outdoor gear retailer REI is “significantly” expanding its rental and used gear sales programs and trade-in options.
These are viable business models. We are learning how to scale that.”REI said it has rented nearly twice as many units so far this year through March versus the same time last year. It’s on track to resell nearly a million used items this year and about double its online used business. The company said it’s also exploring ways for its co-op members to resell and recycle their used outdoor gear at all locations.
“We see physical and digital working together,” said Artz. “People want to engage and touch products. Our Green Vest are very knowledgeable. Getting you into the right pair of shoes that don’t cause a blister is an art.So much is more than just a transaction. Customers see sustainable business practices and us giving back to society. They say, ‘You are relevant to our outdoor experience.’ … When it comes to the competitive landscape, the co-op model can be a competitive advantage.
