Turner came to MLS in 2016 as an undrafted rookie, signing with the New England Revolution with the hope of simply securing a job in the league. After parlaying his humble beginnings into his first start two years later, the goalkeeper set out a slightly more ambitious target.
Turner didn’t even start playing soccer full-time until he was a teenager and wasn’t a full-time starter in college until his junior year. If his current position seems hard to fathom, Turner wants you to know you aren’t alone. He only improved from there and in 2021, he earned his first USMNT cap, won MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, helped the Revs win the MLS Supporters’ Shield and set a new record for shutouts by a USMNT goalkeeper in a calendar year with 13.
Turner signed a new deal with the Revs in 2019 and then again in 2021 as his value surged. The goalkeeper is clearly mixed about how his third request unfolded. Though he was ready to stay with New England, the club’s denial opened up a major opportunity overseas. Aaron Ramsdale has had a breakout season with Arsenal, becoming the club’s unquestioned starter in his first year with the Gunners. Turner will likely begin as Ramsdale’s backup, but he’s shown the ability to overcome entrenched starters before – both at the club and national team level.
Turner’s move to Arsenal prompted some concerns among USMNT fans that when the World Cup kicks off in November, its top two goalkeepers will be backups at club level. Turner counters by pointing out that Steffen, who backs up Ederson at Manchester City, has oftentimes been preferred in spite of Turner’s edge in weekly playing time.
