September offered a minor resurgence. For his last 26 games, Abreu slugged .536 and led the American League with 28 RBIs in that span. His final weekend lent some validation to manager Dusty Baker’s stubborn faith in continuing to play Abreu every day and slot him in the middle of the lineup amid his struggles. It also underscored why Abreu could be an important part of an Astros postseason run.
Yet in some situations, Abreu was notably efficient. His .387 average with men in scoring position and two outs led the team, as did his 15 extra-base hits in those situations. Abreu logged 35 plate appearances with a man on third and less than two outs; the runner scored in 23 of them, or 66%, the highest rate among Houston hitters with double-digit chances, according to Baseball Reference.
At full strength, Houston’s is arguably among this postseason’s deeper lineups, though it proved erratic at times. Michael Brantley, when available, has slotted sixth, with Abreu ahead of him to break up the run of lefthanded hitters. Chas McCormick, who slashed .241/.310/.392 in the last month, and Mauricio Dubón, who slashed .303/.333/.515, are also outfield options.
