There is too much at risk ... to allow one entity to stand in the way of all that we have worked for.
Moses Rose’s Hideout owner Vince Cantu has rejected the Alamo Trust’s offers to buy his property. In response, City Council should move forward with condemnation. After years of debate, deliberation and discussion, the plan to preserve the Alamo as one of our community’s most important civic spaces is well underway.
Stakeholders from across the state came together to ensure we preserve and protect this incredible testament to Texas and San Antonio history, and what once was a disappointing experience to millions of visitors continues to vastly improve. The curb that caused many a visitor injury has been graded, allowing increased accessibility to guests. The historic palisade and 18-pound cannon have been re-created in the plaza, with children and adults clamoring to see where William B. Travis shot the iconic cannon across the Texas landscape toward Santa Anna’s advancing army.
The Alamo plan has long called for the acquisition of 516 E. Houston St. Various businesses in spaces leased by vendors in the Crockett, Woolworth and Palace buildings have relocated, with numerous leases reaching agreements to vacate early, all in preparation for the creation of the Alamo Museum and Visitors Center. A single holdout cannot be allowed to prevent the construction of a world-class museum and visitors center — a project the state has already committed $154 million to build.
