Despite high initial COVID vaccination rates, interest has faltered. Few people are taking...
Remember those long lines to get a COVID-19 vaccine? Interest has faltered in the booster shots, even though they are still needed to protect from the virus. Get boosted. There is no line.During the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020-21, San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg and I held 319 nightly media sessions where we communicated with our citizens, giving them our best advice on how to protect themselves from the virus.
Now as we approach the end of 2022, and with the benefit of experience and hindsight, we can conclude that the COVID-19 vaccine has been an incredible success. Almost 70 percent of eligible Americans have been vaccinated with the primary series, and that figure is close to 95 percent for Americans 65 years and older. Without a doubt vaccination greatly reduces hospitalization and death, particularly in our older community members.
As the virus has evolved, so have the vaccines. An updated bivalent COVID-19 vaccine has been developed to protect against new Omicron subvariants, which comprise most COVID-19 infections diagnosed in the last year. Despite high initial vaccination rates, interest has faltered. Few people are taking advantage of the widely available bivalent booster and early evidence is showing it to be effective at increasing antibody levels in older people and protect against the more recent variants.
