Nearly a quarter of consumers say they've had gift cards with no money on them, according to federal data.
The total was more than $1,600, which included a $6.95 charge to activate some of the cards.
There are certainly times when con artists mess with a card before it’s in a consumer’s hands, stealing the account number and PIN number so they can swipe the cash moments after it’s loaded on the card. In cases like that, the burden is often placed on the consumer to convince a business that it wasn’t them who used the money.
We asked Amazon and Mastercard to review the case to see what they could tell us about the card history and whether they could help the customer.An email to Golebowski from the retail giant’s executive customer relations team said it would credit her the missing $200, and it would also give her an extra $50 “in appreciation of your patience with this matter.”
