The infant was under her care, investigators said.
The Division of Child Protection and Permanency contacted the office concerning the overdose of the 6-month-old on May 19 and an investigation was launched, authorities said.
Investigators said Alia Elsafy, 23, failed to watch the child and allowed the baby to ingest a “suspected opioid,” the office said. A spokeswoman for the office did not return emails seeking comment on the child’s condition or Elsafy’s relationship to the infant. Elsafy was arrested Thursday, charged with child endangerment and was held in the Bergen County Jail ahead of her first court appearance, authorities said. Attorney information for Elsafy was not immediately available.
