The cave—which had water pouring from its ceiling covered in stalactites—stays the same temperature all year round.
"This part in the red brick, this is new. The dude who built the house built bridges, he built this part. That part over there, that's ancient. That was before the house, that was from when this place was a farm before the house was even here. That used to connect to a whole underground road, they built the street right there and closed it off."
Pointing to it, Steven explains:"They used to bring barrels of beer down here to store, from downtown Harrisburg, and they would roll them in on some contraption here, and roll them out." The underground railroad consisted of a network of people who offered shelter and aid to escaped slaves from the South, according to website History.com. It developed as a convergence of various clandestine efforts. While there are no exact dates, it roughly operated from the late 18th century to the Civil War.
