Kimberly Maurer's lawyer, Andrew Race, said the speed at which the jury convicted her was disappointing, but that the public should trust in the jury and the system in-place.
The attorney representing Kimberly Maurer, the Annville Township woman convicted of murdering her fiance’s son, described the conviction as “disappointing.”in the death of 12-year-old Maxwell Schollenberger, who police found nude, malnourished and covered in his own feces in his bedroom.
“He took the license plate off her car and monitored her location by GPS. He took her phone,” Race said. “When someone has small children in that situation, it’s hard to leave, research shows.” Race introduced text messages into evidence that demonstrated that as a result of a work injury, Schollenberger drank to numb the pain, according to Race. He said the man went so far as to say he drank 18 beers.
“I’m a little disappointed, particularly with the speed with which the verdict was reached. I thought there was a lot more to discuss,” Race said. “But, we have to trust the jury to do their job and that’s why we have this system.”
