The event, hosted by the Women’s Museum of California, commemorates the passage of the 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution

Klara Salazar, 13, clapped admiringly at the motivating words that California Secretary of State Shirley Weber delivered from the stage Saturday.

Salazar said she felt inspired by the speech to “take action and speak out” against gender inequality. And, she said, she hopes “to see more women in government.” “The fight gets even bigger for us today because we’re taking steps backward and seeing reproductive rights ... get taken away,” said Elliott-Santos. “It just is an honor to have been able to be part of these events where we get to talk about it. I think that’s the start of a difference.”In June, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, the 1973 ruling that gave constitutional protections to women’s right to abortion.

Outside the museum were several mannequins as part of “The Mannequin Project,” which transformed the simple figures into women who defied gendered expectations in their own fields. One of them was dressed as Chavela Vargas, a Costa Rican-Mexican singer who in the 1950s and ‘60s redefined male-dominated rancheras, or traditional Mexican music.

Women's Equality Is *Still* Not Guaranteed in the U.S. ConstitutionWomen's Equality Is *Still* Not Guaranteed in the U.S. ConstitutionDespite achieving all of the requirements to become an amendment to the Constitution, recognition of the Equal Rights Amendment was blocked by the Trump administration. In January of this year, the Office of Legal Counsel issued a new opinion stating that Congress may take action regarding ratification of the ERA—but Republicans have used the filibuster to block the measure in the Senate. To make the ERA a reality, Democrats need to keep the House and win 52 Senate seats in the fall elections, so they can remove the filibuster and pass the ERA resolution.
