'There are countless unrespectable, unmarried, disruptive, queer, and trans black women whose path-breaking commitments to black liberation were truly historic.'
, and pressures to conform to mainstream norms, has marginalized others in the long struggle for black liberation, too. It wasn’t until I had children of my own that I learned that a darker-skinned, working-class 15-year-old namedwas the first black woman to refuse to give up her seat on a crowded Montgomery bus. It wasn’t Rosa Parks, as I had been taught for so long.
Colvin was arrested on March 2, 1955, when she wouldn’t give up her seat to a white person. She was charged with disorderly conduct, violating segregation law, and assault and battery. The courts eventually dropped two of the charges. Still, before she was even 18 years old, Colvin was convicted of felony assault and battery of a police officer., explains that members of the Women’s Political Council were initially supportive of Colvin.
, on the other hand, was lighter-skinned, married, well-established in the activist community, and chosen by her fellow movement organizers and leaders to be the face of the movement.in 2017 that, after her arrest, she was “ostracized by people in [her] community and professional people also.” According to Colvin, she was also expelled from school when she began showing that she was pregnant.
Colvin says that she “was a little disappointed [at being left out], because the whole movement was about young people, saying we want more from America. We want to stand up and be first class citizens. The discrimination that’s going on, whether gender or racial or whatever, religious. We want it to be brought out and defeated.” Only recently has Colvin’s presence in the movement begun to receive the attention it deserves.
The fact is: There are countless unrespectable, unmarried, disruptive, queer, and trans black women whose path-breaking commitments to black liberation were truly historic, whether those works were recorded in the history books or not. This Women’s History Month, we should unearth those histories and give them the respect they are due.
